Mongolia's Protected Areas are divided into four groups:
- Strictly Protected Areas
Denotes the most pristine of wilderness areas or areas of "particular
importance for science and human civilization". Hunting, logging,
and construction are prohibited.
- National Parks
Denotes wilderness areas with special value such as historical or cultural
significance.
- Natural Reserves
This group is divided into four types. Ecosystem reserves protect natural
areas, Biological reserves are for rare species, Paleontological protect
areas with fossils, and Geological reserves preserve physical sites.
- Natural and Historical Monuments
Denotes an area of special historical significance that is preserved
for research and education.
